Wow! My first week has been amazing! As a single mum I know what it is like to juggle everything without dropping the balls. But now I think I know a little of what it feels like to be a TV scheduler or an air traffic controller. My first week in Genie Towers has been a real eye opener ...

One of the last companies I worked for used the services of The Office Genie and we appreciated every message they took for us and every appointment they booked. I know how difficult it is managing the diary as it was my job. The Genies just took overflow calls when I was snowed under. We had quite high standards (ok we demanded damn near perfection!) and the Genies did very, very well.

But on the other side - it's like a whole new world. I have worked in sticky back plastic and graphics, in an outplacement centre working to find jobs for those being made redundant, for an engineering firm, a brief slot as a shelf stacker for a large supermarket, my family's businesses and for a logistics firm transporting soft drinks ... but I have always done these one at a time, never altogether.

Every day the Genies handle calls from a wide number of clients in a wide number of industries. From domestic and commercial cleaners to aesthetic clinics to bus graphics to musicians to carpets; I'm tired just thinking of the list. They manage LOTS of diaries (at least I only ever had to deal with one!) each with their own complicated rules about times and places.

It amazes me quite how they manage to switch from one client to another in the blink of an eye and still take down the right information for the right client. Booking appointments where necessary, answering questions where they can and explaining that we can't see if the client is off the phone yet, all without saying we are the call service.

And then there are the messages themselves; some clients get all their messages via email, whilst others call to collect their messages once a day and some get their messages by text. For some clients their urgent messages are texted and it is a real judgement call as to what is considered urgent.

And yet, even amidst all this, they keep their cool and calmly answer the callers questions. Amazingly each Genie holds a wealth of information about each client which enables them to handle every enquiry that arrives. The Genies send messages out without blinking. Being a Genie is great, however I think it may be a few weeks before I am fully fledged.

I am in awe of all my colleagues and wonder how soon it will be before I too can handle a bombardment of calls for different clients with such panache.

Still I've only done 3 days so far ... I've got time yet surely!!
