A Year In The Life Of A Genie

My year in chocolate!

Posted on: 06/09/2012   By: Jenny Eaton

Next week I celebrate my first anniversary here at The Office Genie. It's strange looking back; on the one hand it's flashed by so quick I don't really feel like it's been a whole year. On the other hand I feel so comfortable here it's like I've been here forever ...

But Jacqui asked me to put together my thoughts on my first year, so I thought I would give you my year in chocolate! We Genies do tend to focus on Chocolate you know!

  • Cadbury Dairy Milk - It was quite a simple straightforward month in September they eased me in gently, trained me to answer the phones and I got used to the way things worked.

  • Golden Barrel - I really enjoyed my second and third months. I grew in confidence as I found my feet and expanded my responsibilities to include more of the marketing for the business. I felt so comfortable and happy in my work.

  • Turkish Delight - By Christmas I truly felt part of the team and found it hard to believe I was still very new. We had great fun celebrating Christmas; partying with our clients, partying in the office on Christmas Eve and then a completely new one on me - Secret Santa! Having worked with my Dad previously, Christmas had been a strictly family affair, but it seemed to me that the celebrations lasted so much longer last year, and I really felt quite festive!

  • Hazelnut Whirl - The New Year was a real whirlwind for us in the office as we learnt our new phone system and adapted the way we did things with minimal impact to the service we provided our clients. It had its highs and lows, and some of us thought we were going to go crazy (it might just have been me!) as things seemed to change from one day to the next as we learnt how to do things.

  • Caramel Velvet - By February things were much calmer and we had begun to reap the benefits of the new system and had settled down into the new ways of working. I began the Referral Institute's Certified Networker course and learnt as much about myself as I did the business, and Jacqui and I began to see how we could utilise the teachings for The Office Genie.

  • Hazel in Caramel - March really sticks in my mind to be honest. We took on a new PA client who has become our biggest PA client. As his assigned PA, I work very closely with him. It was a completely new thing to me, to get an afternoon's training one day and then to be left alone to do it the next. I confess it took me a little while to get my head around everything to start with (I went a little nuts) but I soon settled into it.

  • Country Fudge - April was interesting and included yet another training course this time out of the county and over in Solihull. This gave rise to a marketing strategy meeting where Jacqui and I sat down to consider making changes to the way we were doing things.

  • Strawberry Dream - May included even more training and an understanding that actually we needed to book time into my diary to allow me to focus on marketing rather than trying to work it alongside the call handling.

  • Brazilian Darkness - With various things happening in the office during June we found ourselves short-staffed and outside of work I had other personal difficulties come to light that needed to be dealt with. I really struggled this month to stay focussed at work and not let what was going on at home affect my work. Jacqui said I coped very well all things considered

  • Caramel - What can I say about July? Like a lot of the other months it flashed by, I'm not really sure what progress I made on any of my projects at work, but I was completely chuffed when someone I had handed Jacqui's cards to back in April rang up to discuss us having his phones for a fortnight whilst he went on holiday in August!

  • Tangy Orange Creme - This last month has been a bit tricky for me. I have been desperately in need of a holiday and consequently been quite stressed. But the two days I took off for a long weekend were really helpful in recharging my batteries especially as one of those days included an afternoon in a Spa with some really lovely ladies. Then I had a week where I needed to find some childcare as my regular childminder was off on holiday, which was a bit stressful as I fretted about him all week!

So here we are and its September again. Im looking forward to my second year as an Office Genie, who knows what it might bring. If you would like to talk to me about my role as a PA or about the telephone answering services we provide then please call me on +44 (0) 845 901 1803 or click here to ping over an email and I'll get right back to you.

Until next time ...

More about Jenny Eaton ...

I love playing with words and I have dreamed of being a writer since I was a child. With a romantic idea of scribbling away in a cold attic room with my trusty fountain pen. I have always dabbled, but until now it’s not come to much.

When I started with The Office Genie it was to provide me with a part time income to support my writing. Over time though I have developed into the Marketing Genie on a full time basis. I love it, I get to play with words all day as I try to share the dream and the passion that Jacqui has turned into The Office Genie. My work involves blogging, letter writing, email writing, web copy writing, e-book writing, campaign planning, strategy planning, social media interactions – it’s like I write and talk all day every day, my parent would say it’s the ideal job for me!

My first blog posts were about my day to day life as a Genie but they are growing into sharing my view of the business world. I am passionate about helping small businesses be the best that they can be, standing out from their competition in the small things that come together to give an impression of great service – to find out how we can help you should call me on the number below.
