It's that time of year again and the supermarkets have aisles devoted to a single day and are now flooded with red and pink. You can find cute soft toys, chocolates, cards and even champagne bottles all adorned with hearts. Yes, next week will see the romantics celebrating Valentine's Day ...

It may seem like a stereotype from the 1980s but Valentine's Day is an important date in the life of an executive secretary. Since the beginning of the year it has been looming, having sorted out the Christmas presents now it's time to help your boss express themselves.

Valentine's Day is the celebration of love, so it's hugely important to get the card, gift and flowers perfect. Not so perfect that it was obviously bought by someone else; it needs to be clear your boss bought it, but also that they put some thought into it!

But these days it's not just executive secretaries and PAs who have The Love Bug; even VAs are hard at work. Small and medium size businesses are realising that sending out cards and gifts at Christmas time do not have the effect they were hoping for. And so they are looking for other ways to stand out against the competition and choosing Valentine's Day instead.

But how can you harness this Crazy Stupid Love? Well, think about it, we only send one Valentine's Card, so a mailing sent out on that day is not getting lost amongst the thousands of cards sent over Christmas. And as we only send cards and gifts to those who are special to us, the association of the card is that the recipient is important. So the impression you leave with your customer or prospect is that they are important to you. All of this without having to work hard at getting the message right!

So what can you do on Valentine's Day to make yourself stand out from the competition? Well your Virtual Assistant could help you with the following:

  • Cards - A well designed card with an appropriate message may work; it depends on your industry and who you are mailing to. Obviously the theme of love and romance ought to feature somewhere, but you shouldn't worry about needing to be Shakespeare in Love.

  • Gifts - Apparently the Chocolate industry does quite well on Valentine's Day too. How about sending your clients a little thank you in the form of personalised chocolates? Or even organising a bottle of Champagne to be sent? Money may be a little tight, so perhaps your VA could be set the challenge of finding something suitable within the budget.   • Promotions - if you have a product that could, however tenuously, be offered under a promotion for Valentine's happiness, then prepare your mailing or voucher and send it out, even if the mailing itself doesn't flood work through your door, it at least reminds people of the sorts of things you do. Whatever you do for Valentine's Day, remember it's all about reminding customers that they are special to you, having fun and inviting them to share the lurve with their friends.
