We all know the story of The Princess and The Pea. The Prince is fed up of meeting fake princesses when yet another one turns up at the doorstep. He really likes her but is just not sure whether she is a real princess or not. So to save him some heartache he asks dear old Ma for advice ...

Now I'm not sure about you but when Ma's solution is to put a pea below 20 mattresses and 20 featherbeds I don't think I would have trusted her! But when I look at it from the Princess's point of view I'm thinking I might have gone off any handsome Prince that presented me with such a ridiculous bed, even if I had turned up on spec without arranging it in advance!
But what we see as the story progresses is that the Princess is a true princess. She couldn't sleep because of the "hard thing" in her bed. But as only a real princess would have the sensitivity to feel the pea, the Prince marries her and they put the pea into the museum! I think I may have become a little too cynical for fairy stories; I mean who in their right mind would put a pea on display in a museum?
Anyway, I'm guessing that by now you are wondering why I am giving you my commentary on the story. My first thought was to talk about our telephone answering service and talk about how we can spot a sales call in the first few seconds. I'm not kidding, the Genies can usually tell within seconds whether the call is from a call centre simply by the level of background noise, if that isn't there then usually a request to speak to a job title or a full name gives it away.
Even if the caller asks for John, we will ask what it relates to and at that point even the savvy salesman usually gives himself away by being vague. You see an ordinary person who is not trying to hide anything doesn't worry about getting past the gatekeeper and so will usually be quite specific in what they want to talk about and when they last spoke to the person in question.
My plan therefore was to talk about the discerning nature of our service and how we can help you to discard the fake calls that are just a distraction and allow you to focus on those real calls that will add value to your business.
Then it occurred to me that businesses need to be careful that they are not like "dear old Ma" and we don't put too many mattresses down. Like I said earlier I would have baulked at the size of my bed for the night, and so I wouldn't like to have to jump through hoops in order to get to speak to someone on the phone.
However, as I said, we Genies are actually good at spotting sales calls in the first few seconds and they get turned away politely. And if it is not a sales call then the caller gets our brilliant call handling where we politely explain that the person they need to speak to is unavailable at the moment but we will get them to call back at the earliest convenience.
